I’m a Grown Man and I Love My Weighted Blanket

If you saw me walking down the street — a 36-year-old professional guy in relatively good shape — you’d never think that I cuddle under a weighted blanket to help me fall asleep. But I do. And there’s a good reason why. Over the past six months, I’ve changed jobs, moved to a new city, and ended a long-term relationship. My stress levels have been sky high. Some nights, I would lie awake staring at the ceiling, waiting for my mind to slow down. Before resorting to an over-the-counter sleep aid, I wanted to try a drug-free option to help me sleep better. That’s when I came across weighted blankets.
I read that they can help calm feelings of anxiety and stress and boost melatonin to help you sleep. Some research shows they may improve insomnia (bingo!). Some people even say it feels like they’re being hugged by the blanket. A hug from a non-judgemental blanket sounded pretty good to me, so I started shopping around.
Turns out that DreamCloud, the same company where I got my mattress last year, makes weighted blankets. I had a good experience with them, and I love my mattress. I decided to give it a try.
I received my 20-pound BLANQUIL™ a few days later, and right away I could tell that this wasn’t your average blanket. The material was soft and quilted, and the weighted filling inside shifts as you move, so you don’t feel stuck or suffocated. I did expect it to be a bit bigger, but it was just large enough to cover my frame. The craziest thing was that it actually felt like the blanket was hugging me. It feels weird to admit, but I did feel comforted and a little less stressed right away.
That night, I pulled the weighted blanket overtop my comforter and slept seven hours for the first time in weeks. I can’t emphasize how amazing it felt not to wake up with racing thoughts in the middle of the night. Still, I thought it might be my imagination — or the placebo effect — so I slept without it the next night and woke up around 2am with my mind chattering. Clearly, the weighted blanket is legit.
Now it’s become a part of my life. After work, I chill with it on the couch when I watch TV, and I sleep with it every night. And I’m happy to say that my stress and anxiety are getting better. Most nights, I can fall asleep quickly, and I don’t wake up feeling stressed out. I’m sure time and me adjusting to things has something to do with my improvement. But I can definitely say that my weighted blanket has been a major factor in helping me sleep better. I feel more like myself again.
Apparently, you’re never too old for a blankie, especially if it’s one that works as well as this. Don’t believe me? Try it for yourself — you won’t be sorry.
