What Causes Snoring

There’s nothing more irritating to the people around you than being a snorer.

Unfortunately, it seems like many snorers can’t control the sounds they make when they fall asleep. So what causes snoring? Is there anything you can do about it? Well, yes and no. First off, snoring is simple, it’s the vibration caused by tissue in the nose and throat when air can’t move freely through those passages.

That vibration can come from a number of places, but often it has to do with factors like weight gain, alcohol, or even the position you sleep in. If we know what causes snoring in your particular case, it becomes easier to diagnose if this is a serious problem, or if there are small things you can do to improve your situation.

Though snoring is sometimes linked to sleep apnea, they are not synonymous. While snoring can be a symptom of sleep apnea, apnea is actually the stoppage of breath during sleep, which is not the case with a snorer.

If you experience noise during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, or a sore throat after a night of sleeping, there could be causes of your snoring that need to be addresses. If you think this is a case, consult a medical professional. Often they will recommend reducing alcohol intake, weight loss, and better sleep hygiene.

These lifestyle changes may seem daunting at first, but they are important to look at when we look at what causes snoring, and how we can treat it. The first step is the hardest, but know that snoring is a treatable condition, and not a life sentence.
